If you would like to save money and go for consistency through-out it might be better to go with all satin or eggshell paint. This gives you some shine, which is easy to clean but not so bright and shiny as to cause unnecessary fatigue.

Generally the shinier semi-gloss would be a possibility for the less private areas of the home such as the living room and kitchen.

The lower sheen paints would be for the more private areas like bathrooms and bedrooms.  It’s a difference between being more showy or more muted.

If you are more oriented to touch and textures you could do satin.  It might make sense to use this in areas that are more intimate (such as your reading room or bathrooms) and use one of the glossier options in other areas for some contrast.

It’s easier to separate the sheen levels if you are using different colors in different areas of the house.

Satin Paint

The luster of satin paint is often described as appearing velvety, with a glow rather than a shine.

It is very durable and creates an understated depth in a space.  It’s a great choice for areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and kids’ rooms.

Eggshell Paint

Eggshell paint has a more subtler sheen which will reflect and bounce light, creating comfortable depth in a room.  The softer sheen can be emphasized or toned down with brighter or dimmer lighting.

It’s slightly less durable but will hold up better than matte or flat paints.

Great rooms for eggshell include living and dining rooms as it does not pick up dirt so easily.

For walls with imperfections eggshell can disguise them more easily.
